Video pinball takes a huge leap forward with Pinball HD for iPhone and iPad. Pinball HD comes with three different pinball tables to play: Wild West, The Deep and Jungle Style. The gameplay is similar with each table, pull back on the spring launcher with your finger and tap on the bottom right and left of your screen to control the flippers. Simulate leaning on the machine by tilting your iPad or iPhone to nudge your ball in the direction you want to go. You can switch between two views by sliding both of your fingers up or down the sides of your device. In landscape mode you can see the entire table or slide your fingers to switch to flying table mode. Flying table mode follows the ball around the table in a close up view. At first I stuck to landscape while trying to orient myself to the game, but ultimately the flying table mode is a lot more fun.
We’ve come a long way since the early days of video pinball. I remember my mom staying up late one night in the mid-seventies playing pinball on the Intellivision. Once the game was finally over she took a Polaroid of the screen to prove her high score. I’m amused by that memory while I’m playing Pinball HD where every score is recorded with the date and name of the player. There’s also really in-depth guide to the game for the OCD players out there.
Overall Pinball HD is a great arcade app for all ages, the game physics are realistic and the graphics are impressive.
