For fans of the television show Wipeout on ABC (I know I am), comes a mobile installment from game design titan Activision. Wipeout is a scrolling platform game that brings the bumbling, water-logged shenanigans of the network TV gameshow to iOS. And, it really isn’t that successful.
As expected, players take on the role of Wipeout contestants as they attempt to overcome a series of moving foam obstacles and platform gaps. The game orients players horizontally, scrolling as they move further left. The control scheme entails swipe and tap gestures on the bottom of the screen. For example, to jump players must swipe up on the bottom right corner of the screen, and to slide they must swipe sideways. In concept, it could have been pretty intuitive. Finally, gamers can choose between a career game mode or a time trial mode, the latter allowing for players to beat scores they set when leves were first cleared in the story mode.
In short, this game really isn’t effective for me at all. I think there is a lot of potential, and it was an interesting idea to transfer the on-screen antics of a popular TV game show to mobile devices. But the execution was really lacking. To start, the controls are really clunky. They ask players to use swipe gestures on the bottom corners of the screen as if there are joysticks and buttons there, but there aren’t. Many games draw in graphical control buttons, and it’s usually pretty effective. This one skipped that step and it makes things difficult.
Beyond this, the level objectives are pretty repetitive, so it makes for a decidedly boring experience. Additionally, the graphics and gameplay are both glitchy and clunky. I can’t really explain it, but character movements aren’t natural or elegant. The bottom line is I didn’t really enjoy the experience. I think it works well for a quick pick-me-up, but if you’re looking for a game with any longevity, this isn’t for you.
