Great Big War Game may not re-invent the wheel in terms of gameplay, but offers up some of the most solid battle-strategy action on the iPad and iPhone, even challenging the greats in the genre like Advanced Wars or Golden Sun.
Gameplay in Great Big War Game will be familiar territory for anyone who has played a battle-strategy game before. Create and position your units and march them towards the objective until you have conquered the level’s main goal which usually amounts to defending your base, capturing the opponents, or defending/eliminating a general. Bonuses, fights and uncovering the fog of war stand in your way as you hire snipers, grenadiers, tanks, boats, helicopters, turrets, powerful jets and other dogs of war to shoot, explode and crush the enemy that stands in your way. A simple monetary system determines your unit production with the more bases you have, the more dough you will be raking in to strengthen your army. Battle Bonuses give added depth to the system which can be turned in for bigger upgrades and special units.
Although they don’t rival the japanime style graphics of previous battle-strategy titles, I particularly enjoyed the easy-going graphics, chuckle-worthy voice-over and in-depth features like multiplayer or skirmish mode where you can jump right into a big battle.
I found one of the only negatives to be that the turrets were well over-powered and can be exploited and often times my strategic assaults were miffed because you can never really tell how far an enemies range is.
These minor quibbles aside and Great Big War Game is a great big throng of fun that any iPad or iPhone gamer, whether they’ve mastered all the games in the genre, or have never played a battle-strategy game before, can enjoy.
