Blokus is a really interesting board game app for two to four players. The original Blokus Classics Game by Mattel won the 2003 Mensa Select Award and the 2004 Teacher’s Choice Award. I’ve never played the original game, but can tell that the app version is probably a little easier because the board highlights all of the options for your next move and you don’t have to fuss with all of the pieces.
The object of Blokus is for each player to place all of their pieces on the board. The game is over when all players are blocked from laying down any more pieces. When you place a block, it must touch the corner of one of your other pieces and it can’t touch any of the sides. Your pieces can touch the sides of your opponent’s. You can turn your piece around and flip it horizontally or vertically. Points are based on how many squares you cover with your pieces, so I like to use the bigger pieces first and reserve the smaller ones for the end of the game. The player with the highest score wins.
Blokus has found a permanent home in my board games folder on my iPad. I’ve enjoyed playing this with my husband and I’m also looking forward to introducing it to some of my friend’s kids. Oh, and be sure to get the HD version if your going to put this on your iPad, there isn’t a price difference (at the time of this post) and you’ll be happier with the image quality.
